Tip #1: How to Add a Special Symbol Quickly
You will definitely need to use special symbols or characters occasionally while typing and there’s a quick way to do it. Simply tap and hold the desired key for few seconds and a list of special symbols associated with that letter will pop-up on the screen to choose from. You have to select the special symbol without releasing the key, else the list will fade out. This is very useful trick to insert many other symbols like an inverted exclamation, currency symbol, longer hyphens, accented characters etc. This also works with the .com key, offering a few other top-level domains by tapping and holding the corresponding keys.
Tip #2: How to Enable Emoji Dictionary for WhatsApp
If you a chatty person and like to chat with friends then this is quite handy trick for you. You definitely need Smiley Symbols while Chatting on WhatsApp, Tweeting, Messaging or updating Facebook status. Emoji is the term for these Smiley Symbols in your iPhone. You need to enable it before you can use them. You can do this by going to Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards > Add New Keyboard > Scroll down to find Emoji in the list and tap on it. Your keyboard should show a globe icon, if there wasn’t one already and you can then easily access the Emoji keyboard by tapping the globe icon until you get to the Emoji keyboard.
Tip #3: How to Type Whole Sentence in Capital Letters
CAPS LOCK is generally hated. I hate it too. A text actually looks ugly in ALL CAPS. But then there are cases when you can’t avoid typing a couple of letters or full sentence in capital letters. Normally you would do it by enabling the cap lock key, type the letter repeatedly. But there’s a much simpler way to do it. You can Enable Caps Lock by going to Settings > General > Keyboard > Enable Caps Lock and then double-tap the shift key to turn it into a Caps Lock key. The Shift key will turn dark blue until you press the key again.
Tip #4: How to Display Character Counts in Messages
It’s often useful to know how long your SMS messages are, either for Tweeting, or to be sure that you are charged for one message. The iPhone does not show character counts by default, but it’s easy to tweak. You can enable it by going to Settings > Messages > Character Count > toggle to ON. Now when you are composing a text message, you’ll see the count of characters you’re sending on the right side of the display i.e. above the send button.
Tip #5: How to Add an International Keyboard
If you want to send texts in Chinese or type in Hindi language then you need to enable that particular keyboard and there is easy way to do it. You can enable it by going to Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards > Tap on the Keyboard name from the list to add a new language to your active keyboards. Once done, you simply have to tap on the globe icon on the keyboard to switch to another language.
Tip #6: How to Use a Full Stop Shortcut
This is one of the coolest tricks to use and is my favorite one also. You often need to add a dot or period or full stop after typing a sentence. But there is an easier way to do it. Just double-tap the space bar on the keyboard and it will automatically insert a dot followed by a space. The next alphabet typed will automatically be written in uppercase without you having to press the Shift key. You can enable it by going to Settings > General > Keyboard > Auto-Capitalization > toggle to ON, if its not already enabled.
Tip #7: How to Add Apostrophes Quickly
One thing I like about iOS is that the keyboard is really very smart. It’s pre-loaded with many features to ease your typing experience. For instance, if you need to type “doesn’t”, just forget the apostrophe and quickly type “doesnt” – the keyboard will automatically insert the apostrophe at the appropriate place. You can also press and hold the comma key to get the apostrophe without switching to the numeric keyboard.
Tip #8: How to Change the Dollar Symbol
Can’t find the € symbol on your keyboard? To insert this symbol like € (Euro) or ¥ (Yen) or £ (Pound), you simply have to tap and hold the $ (Dollar) key. A list of currency symbols will pop-up, just tap on the currency needed.
Tip #9: How to Split iPad Keyboard into Two
You know iPad’s keyboard is really long, but you can split the keyboard into two active keyboards to ease your typing. You can enable split keyboard by tapping and holding the keyboard icon in the bottom right corner of your iPad’s keyboard and select the Split option. Another way of enabling the split mode is by pulling it apart using two fingers, from the middle towards either side. If you don’t see any option then you need to enable it by going to Settings -> General -> Keyboard and toggle the Split Keyboard option.
Tip #10: How to Setup Custom Shortcuts
Did you know that you could set up your own shortcuts for the phrases you use frequently while typing? Yes, you can. For instance, you can set a custom shortcut for your email address like myemail. You can set it by going to Settings > General > Keyboard > Shortcuts. There are a few shortcuts already added. To add a new shortcut, just tap on the “+” icon on the top right and fill the respective fields.
